We’re getting the first look at La La Land from writer-director Damien Chazelle, his first feature following his breakout Whiplash in 2014.

There’s no dialogue, but the teaser trailer is set to a sultry version of “City of Stars” sung by Ryan Gosling, and a clear onscreen chemistry is evident between Gosling and Emma Stone, reminiscent of what we saw in their previous teamings in Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad.

Written and directed by Chazelle, La La Land tells the story of Mia (Stone) an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern Los Angeles, the original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

The cast also includes Whiplash Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Rosemarie DeWitt and Meagen Fay. The film is produced by Imposter Pictures, Gilbert Films and Marc Platt Productions. Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz, Gary Gilbert and Marc Platt are producers.

La La Land opens the Venice Film Festival on August 31 and Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment releases on December 2.
