UPDATE, 7:30 PM: A short biopic of Hillary Clinton was shown tonight just before the 2016 nominee took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, the video featured a slew of political heavyweights like POTUS 42 and 44 and HRC herself. Take a look at it above.
Coming after remarks by daughter Chelsea on the closing night of the DNC and narrated by the voice of cinematic God himself Morgan Freeman, the film was shown on cable news as well as NBC and Fox, which was using the Fox News feed. CBS did not show the Scandal EPs-produced film and neither did ABC, the home of TGIT – at least not at first.
PREVIOUSLY, 1:36 PM: Shonda Rhimes has long been a Hillary Clinton fan and tonight at the DNC, the Scandal EP will give the former Secretary of State some cinematic support. Rhimes and fellow TGIT EP Betsy Beers have produced the 12-minute film that will played at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia before Clinton hits the stage after 10 PM ET.
Narrated by another big HRC booster Morgan Freeman, the biographical film will talk about the ex-First Lady’s mother and her influence on her daughter. It will also feature clips from Clinton, her husband Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, a 9/11 survivor and first responder plus old friends of the former NY Senator. (We’ll update with the video as soon as we can grab it). Former and perhaps future First Daughter Chelsea Clinton will introduce her mother tonight.
“It is an honor to provide America with an intimate portrait of Hillary,” said Rhimes in a statement about tonight’s film put out by the Clinton campaign Thursday. “Everyone already knows the powerhouse – now, with this piece, everyone will also get to know the person.” Added Beers, “Producing this film was a major highlight of my career, and I am incredibly honored that the campaign entrusted us with the responsibility. It is beyond inspiring to see this amazing woman secure the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.”
This isn’t the first film this year that Rhimes has orchestrated for Clinton.
On March 10, a paid 1-minute ad from the campaign ran in ABC’s Rhimes dominated Thursday primetime. With HRC being called a “champion for all of us” by Scandal star Kerry Washington, Rhimes was joined by Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo and How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis in the spot.“I’m with Hillary” declared all of the TGIT leads plus Rhimes in the ad.
While details on tonight’s film are scant, perhaps we can assume the idea was being kicked around as early as February 22 when Clinton made an unannounced visit to the Scandal set. In L.A. for another series of fundraisers, Clinton met with Washington, Scott Foley, Katie Lowes, Darby Stanchfield and President Fitzgerald Grant AKA Tony Goldwyn – the latter spoke earlier this week at the DNC.
This year’s DNC has already seen A-list talent working on films played in the Wells Fargo Center with J.J. Abrams producing the clip shown before Michelle Obama spoke on July 25. Multiple Emmy winner Peter Kunhardt and Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth documentarian Davis Guggenheim made the film that was played last night before Barack Obama gave his speech. Guggenheim is a repeat performer in that regard – he made the film that played before then Senator Obama took the stage at the DNC in Denver in 2008.
