One of the busiest people in the business is adding another project to his regimen. Dwayne Johnson is developing Muscle Beach, a scripted drama series project that USA Network has acquired. The project from Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions and Flynn Picture Co. is set in a legendary bodybuilding gym in 1980s Venice Beach.
Here’s the logline: A colorful tribe of lost souls struggles to reinvent themselves by bench-pressing their way to a bigger, better American dream, no matter what the cost. As the series explores the body-obsessed fitness movement that took the nation by storm during the supersized Reagan ’80s, the excess of the era and the many temptations of Los Angeles will expose the dark side of chasing dreams.

Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks is reteaming with FlynnPicturesCo., Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer — the producing and writing team that sold Alpha Squad 7 to DreamWorks this year. Beau Flynn, Johnson, Garcia, Friedman and Palmer will executive produce.
“Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Seven Bucks Productions are the only people on the planet to collaborate with on this groundbreaking and never-before-seen show,” Flynn said. “Venice Beach in the 80s is iconic and like no era or place that existed before or after.”
Muscle Beach is different from Pump, the similarly themed series project Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Monday about his formative years at a Venice Beach gym in the 1970s. That eight-episode drama from Emmett/Furla/Oasis is set up at CBS Television Studios.
Flynn and Johnson’s feature Baywatch recently wrapped production and hits theaters worldwide on May 19, 2017. The duo will begin shooting Rampage in March. Friedman and Palmer’s first script, Family Getaway, sold to Warner Bros and made the 2010 Black List. Their recent credits include Warner Bros’ The Bodyguard remake and Sony’s The Karate Kid 2.
Seven Bucks Productions is repped by WME, the Garcia Companies and Gang Tyre. FlynnPictureCo. is with Hansen Jacobsen, and Friedman and Palmer are repped by UTA, Mosaic and Sloane Offer.
