Broad Green Pictures, which has been struggling to find its footing and is making a transition to broader commercial films, is laying off five people (which translates to 6% of its workforce) in distribution, marketing and publicity. Separately from the layoffs, Broad Green’s head of publicity head Adam Keen is resigning. The layoffs are immediate and staffers are expected to get some kind of compensation package.
One source told Deadline that “we don’t need as many staffers” because the slate doesn’t warrant it. Broad Green has only two films the rest of this year — the Kate Winslet starring Dressmaker on Sept. 23 and Billy Bob Thornton reprising his role in Bad Santa 2 on Nov. 23.
Keen will transition out of the job over the next two weeks. Sister publication Variety broke the story. Broad Green credits have included Terrence Malik’s Knight of Cups, Robert Redford’s A Walk in the Woods, two quality films. While Knight of Cups only made $566K at the box office in its total run, A Walk in the Woods opened to $8.2M and yielded close to a four multiple with a domestic B.O. of $29.5M. Last Days in the Desert which starred Ewan McGregor was suppose to come out on May 13, but no gross was reported.
Next year, Broad Green has Ron Shelton’s action comedy Villa Capri stepping into that Walk in the Woods Labor Day slot. The film stars Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones in a story about an ex-FBI agent (Jones) and an ex-mob lawyer in the witness protection program (Freeman) having to put aside their petty rivalry on the golf course to fend off a mob hit.
