UPDATE, WRITETHRU, Monday, 4:47 PM: The full five-day China frame on Legendary/Universal’s Warcraft has come in at $156M (1.027B rmb). That sets a new Middle Kingdom opening weekend milestone, topping Avengers: Age Of Ultron and its 996M rmb start last year. Warcraft also set a speed record to 1B rmb — by a matter of hours. It hit the mark in 114 hours, outpacing Universal’s own Furious 7 which got there in 120. Legendary is distributing Warcraft in China via China Film Group and Huaxia. Elsewhere, this is a Universal release. In 51 Uni territories, the fantasy video game adaptation scored $29.9M for an international cume outside the PROC of $107.4M. The full offshore total through the weekend is now $263.4M including China. Combined with the domestic opening this weekend the worldwide total is $287.5M.

Universal also provided a six-day worldwide cume of $304.6M (six-day in China is $173M)
Warcraft’s China Sunday was worth $11.2M, a big drop from previous days, although today marked a return to work after the Dragon Boat Festival which had been in swing this week. The film nevertheless accounted for 74.5% of the total Sunday Chinese box office. IMAX was good for a $20M China weekend on 292 screens. That widely outpaces the previous record set by Ultron with $17.1M. IMAX plays accounted for 20 of the Top 20 engagements in the Middle Kingdom. The full international IMAX weekend was $22.9M on 506. That takes the overseas large-format total to $27.8M.
Warcraft is the clear weekend leader in offshore play on a busy weekend that also saw the wide debut of Warner Bros/New Line’s The Conjuring 2. That film is No. 2 for the international frame. James Wan’s follow-up to his 2013 horror hit The Conjuring has generated some scary good numbers. With a $51.5M international debut in 44 markets, the opening haul for Conjuring 2 doubles the original film in like-for-like markets and is the best bow ever for a horror film in 26.
In more sequel news, Lionsgate’s Now You See Me 2 launched its wide overseas release with an estimated $20.1M from 30 markets, including strong upticks from the first film in Asia, Brazil and Russia. Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows had a $13.3M weekend. Also notable is Disney’s The Jungle Book roaring past $900M worldwide while Sony’s Angry Birds flew past $200M international.

THE CONJURING 2
On 10,400 screens in 44 markets, the James Wan-helmed sequel landed No. 1s in 25 including all of Latin America, Australia and several Asian markets. The $51.5M weekend estimate doubles the original film’s opening in like-for-like plays and is the best bow ever for a horror film in 26 markets including Australia, Mexico, Brazil, all of Latin America and most Asia hubs. Against another comp, Annabelle, it is 28% above in similar markets.
The top play was Mexico with $9M on 3,300 screens. Mexico was also the lead market on the original film which went on to gross $19.2M there. Korea came in at $4M on 600 screens — on par with the previous movie in a market that has a lot of action this frame. Brazil was worth $4.1M on 781 screens, doubling the start of the No. 2 movie, Now You See Me 2. In Australia, the demonologists conjured $3M on 205 screens, 40% above fellow opener TMNT2. Argentina haunted $2.85M on 307 screens with nearly 60% share of the Top 5, already surpassing the lifetime cume of Annabelle and ranking as the No. 2 WB opening weekend of all time behind Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles here as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who take their paranormal investigation skills to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits. This is a film that is expected to play well throughout the summer — particularly as counterprogramming to the Euro 2016 soccer tournament — and has key openings on deck in Germany and Russia (June 16), the UK and Spain (June 17), Italy (June 23) and France (June 29.).
The original film scared up $319M worldwide with $182M from international.
Warcraft’s China invasion began Tuesday night with midnights that posted $7.6M to come in just under record-setter F7. From there, the film started hitting milestones in the market that has a long history with the game. It was released on the highest percentage of screens ever — aided in part by Legendary’s relationship with Wanda which is now its owner — and set a new benchmark for the best first-day box office for a non-weekend release on Wednesday. The next day was the biggest box office ever for a Thursday, and on Saturday it became the fastest film ever to cross 900M rmb in the Middle Kingdom with $144.7M (950M rmb).
On Sunday, the Duncan Jones-directed adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s vidgame franchise added $11.2M and now has a local cume of $156M. The film benefited from an early PROC release, coming two days ahead of its domestic bow, and fueled by strong opening grosses in Russia and Germany in the prior frames. There is certainly some front-load here, but the $156M five-day cume comes in better than the high-end of estimates which had it at about $152M before the weekend.
IMAX set further records in China with the best ever midnight previews ($1.4M); the top Wednesday, opening day and one-day gross ($6M); and the biggest Friday of all time ($4.2M). In its first three days, Warcraft orced-out to an IMAX total of $15.2M for the fastest time to 100M rmb, lapping Furious 7 which took six days to rev that high.
In 51 Universal release territories, Warcraft added $29.9M this frame. It has thus far opened No. 1 in 45 and has a Uni cume of $107.4M. Combined with China, the international total is $263.4M and the worldwide cume is $287.5M.
There were No. 1 starts in 18 out of 23 new Universal territories this weekend. Korea was tops with $5.1M, coming in No. 2 behind Disney’s The Jungle Book in its first swing at the market. Taiwan was next at No. 1 with $2.7M for the weekend. Other notable No. 1s inlcude Hong Kong ($1.3M); Singapore ($1M); and Ukraine ($911K for the biggest opening day and 2nd biggest opening weekend behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Malaysia started off at NO. 2 with $1.5M.
In Europe, where Euro 2016 is impacting box office, Warcraft kicked off with No. 1 openings in Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Slovakia. Elsewhere, No. 1s include Vietnam ($556K); Greece ($338K); South Africa ($284K); Finland ($282K); and Israel ($262K).
Germany is the top holdover, remaining No. 1 for the third week in a row with an 17-day total of $12.2M. Russia has cumed $20.1M; France has a 19-day total of $9.7M; Spain $4.2M; the UK $7.3M; and Brazil $4.7M. Warcraft has 14 more territories to open over the next two months. Next weekend, it descends upon Australia, Cyprus, Mexico, New Zealand and Venezuela.
The latest in Fox’s X-Men franchise has mutated to a $341.5M overseas cume, coming off of a $24.4M weekend in 76 international markets. Despite the onslaught of Warcraft in China, XMA held well there to add $14.29M in No. 2. The market cume is 16% bigger than Batman V Superman and 21% above X-Men: Days Of Future Past through same point in Middle Kingdom release. France also held well with a 41% drop in frame four and a $14.2M cume to date. Brazil dipped by 19% also in week four and is 20% bigger than DOFP. The total there is $17.46M. The UK has grossed $24.6M to date while Korea is at $20.9M. Japan releases in August.
NOW YOU SEE ME 2
Lionsgate’s heist sequel kicked off its wide overseas release with an estimated $21.2M from 30 markets. It had bowed in Australia last frame and with that, the international cume is now $22.9M. The sequel debuted No. 1 in Russia with $5.9M, followed by Taiwan (No. 1/$2.6M), Brazil (No. 2/$2.3M), Hong Kong (No. 1/$1.8M) and Italy (No. 1/$1.2M). Per Lionsgate, the second film in the magic thriller franchise was up 200% in local currencies in Asia; 51% in Brazil; and 23% in Russia. Scandinavia opens this coming week, followed by a China bow on June 24 and the UK on July 4, towards the tail end of Euro 2016 play. It won’t hit some of the other European majors until the soccer tournament has wrapped.
ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
With a much better than expected $16.1M (up $2M from the Sunday estimate) in its 3rd offshore weekend, Alice is looking at an international cume of $152.5M for a worldwide take of $215M. Playing in 44 markets, the Disney pic is led by China with $55.7M. Holds in Europe were decent, with Euro 2016 making way for family films. Spain dropped 35%, Germany 38% and France 40%. The next key market for the underperformer is Korea on July 1.
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS
Taking the international cume to $55.3M, the heroes on the half-shell pulled in $13.3M overseas in 44 overseas markets. There were four additional openings, although the total fell by 60% from last weekend’s debut. Australia was a No. 2 start with $2M from 245 locations: 6% above Angry Birds and 44% below TMNT1. Mexico was the top holdover at $1.6M for a total $7.1M; followed by Russia with $1.5M for $7.7M. The other lead markets include the UK with $6.9M and Venezuela at $4.6M. There are many more markets to come for Paramount’s sequel including Brazil, Korea and the Netherlands this week, plus China on July 2 and the rest of the key European markets throughout June, July and August as the soccer plays through.
THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE
The other game adaptation at offshore turnstiles has flown past $200M internationally with a cume of a higher than expected $215.2M (up from $213.9M) off of a $11.5M (up from $10.4M) weekend. Sony’s take on the Rovio mobile franchise also became the 4th highest-grossing U.S. animated film of all time in China as it comes in for a landing there with a total $73.1M. Red & Co were in 87 total markets this frame, launching in Taiwan with $821K from 105 screens. Hong Kong benefited from a 27% jump thanks to an extended holiday and has now cumed $1.4M. Germany dipped just 28% in its 5th session for a total $10.2M to date.
THE JUNGLE BOOK
The Disney jungle-naut added Korea, one of its last markets, this weekend, and brought its global cume swinging past $900M. With a $10.2M frame worldwide ($2.7M domestic, $8.2M international) the global total is now $910.6M including $557.9M from overseas. The Jon Favreau-helmed favorite is the No. 3 movie of 2016 domestically, internationally and globally, behind the Mouse’s own Cap3 and Zootopia. This was the 10th offshore frame with play continuing in 30 material territories. Korea was a No. 1 start with $6.2M. Japan is yet to come on August 11.
ME BEFORE YOU
MGM/New Line/WB’s tearjerker held well for $5.4M in 17 markets and on 1,660 screens. The cume to date on the soccer counterprogrammer is now $18.8M. The UK remains key on the Emilia Clarke/Sam Claflin-starrer where it has been No. 1 for nine consecutive days. It added $2.1M this frame, dropping just 17% and bringing the cume to $6.5M. Also holding onto No. 1, Norway generated $540K from 109 screens. The cume is now $2M. Korea, where most pics are skewing male, added $889K in the frame for a total $3.5M to date. Australia and Brazil launch next weekend with Germany on deck June 23.
After breaking the $1B mark last weekend worldwide, Zootopia posted $3.4M in its 18th weekend of overseas release from 16 material territories. The box office on the Disney charmer continues to be driven by Japan which was its last major release market. The weekend was worth $2.7M, a 19% drop from the previous session and the 6th consecutive frame as the top Western movie. The cume there is now $61.3M.
After baring his sassy a** for the first time in Japan last weekend, Fox’s other X-Man picked up $2.3M on 756 screens for a total of $11.4M so far in the market. That running cume tops Batman V Superman in the market and exceeds the total box office run of Guardians Of The Galaxy. The international total is now $414M.
