Skylanders Academy, the first project from video game giant Activision Blizzard’s in-house production outfit Activision Blizzard Studios, has found a home on Netflix with a two-season order. It will debut on the streaming service in the fall. The series was first announced in November 2015 along with the creation of the studio.
Based on the company’s successful Skylanders line of toys-to-life video games that combine playable figurines with video game content, Skylanders Academy charts the adventures of the team of heroes as they train the next wave of Skylanders Academy cadets. It will feature the voices of Justin Long (Alvin And The Chipmunks) as Spyro, Ashley Tisdale (Phineas And Ferb) as Stealth Elf, Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad) as Eruptor, and Norm MacDonald (Saturday Night Live) as Glumshanks. Additional voice talent includes The Diamond Minecart, Susan Sarandon, Daniel Wu, Parker Posey, James Hetfield, Catherine O’Hara, Bobcat Goldthwait, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jonny Rees, Harland Williams and Richard Horvitz.
Futurama writer Eric Rogers serves as showrunner, with Activision Blizzard Studios co-presidents Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk executive producing alongside Sander Schwartz, who previously produced The Batman, The Aquabats! Super Show!, and Justice League: The New Frontier.

The first of several projects coming from Activision Blizzard Studios, Skylanders Academy is animated by the TeamTO studio in France. Though the series was fully financed in-house, Activision Blizzard is exploring a range of partnership options for future productions, which will be based exclusively on other existing Activision Blizzard IP including the hit Call Of Duty franchise, Starcraft, Destiny, Diablo, and Candy Crush Saga. The company wouldn’t comment on where further productions may end up, though Sher and van Dyk say it is exploring a range of possible content providers.
Sher tells Deadline that Activision Blizzard Studios considers the Netflix deal to be “the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” and cites the streaming service’s strong showing of family and kids programming as the reason for the Skylanders Academy deal.
Since launching in 2011, the Skylanders series, created by Activision Blizzard subsidiary Toys For Bob, has earned more than $3 billion and has sold through more than 250 million toys. The next installment of the video game series is Skylanders Imaginators, unveiled earlier this month.
