EXCLUSIVE: Rene Russo, who won raves for her turn as the hard-charging, overly ambitious news producer opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the critically acclaimed Nightcrawler, is in negotiations to join Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones in Broad Green Pictures’ action comedy Villa Capri.
Directed and written by Ron Shelton, the story is about an ex-FBI agent (Jones) and an attorney who is in the witness protection program (Freeman) who have to put aside their petty differences to fend off a mob hit. It’s said to be in the vein of the 1988 chase comedy Midnight Run. Russo and Shelton have worked together before, in his 1996 film Tin Cup.
Billy Gerber and Endurance Steve Richards are producing with John Mass and Alan Simpson executive producing. Filmmakers are currently location scouting in New Mexico and the film is scheduled for release on Aug. 25, 2017.
Broad Green has U.S. rights to the film which it is co-producing along with Entertainment One (eOne), which will be distributing in Canada, the U.K., Australia/New Zealand, Benelux and Spain. Sierra/Affinity is handling foreign sales.
Russo, who last co-starred with Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in The Intern, is repped by UTA, manager John Crosby and attorney Howard Abramson.
