UPDATE, 1:25 PM: Fiat Chrysler said today it is investigating the accident that killed Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin. A spokesman for the automaker told media outlets the company would conduct a “thorough investigation” of the incident, but added “It is premature to speculate on its cause at this time.” Yelchin was killed when his 2015 Jeep Cherokee rolled backwards down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence, according to police. Yelchin’s SUV was one of 1.1 million Fiat Chrysler vehicles worldwide subject to a recall because of a gear shift problem that has confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly.
PREVIOUS, Sunday 12:50 PM: Following the tragic death of Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin early this morning, the Los Angeles Police Department has released a statement shedding light on the accident that took his life.
“A fatal traffic collision happened in Studio City. On Sunday, June 19 at 1:10 in the morning, a fatal traffic collision occurred. It was the result of the victim’s own car rolling backwards down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence,” said LAPD spokesperson Jenny Hauser. “The victim was on his way to meet his friends for rehearsal. And when he didn’t show up, his friends went to his house, where they found him deceased by his car. It appeared he had momentarily exited his car leaving it in the driveway.”
Yelchin’s friends, colleagues and admirers are still in shock this morning as condolences pour in following the news of his passing. Among them, Paramount mourned his loss, saying in a statement “All of us at Paramount join the world in morning the untimely passing of Anton Yelchin. As a member of the Star Trek family, he was beloved by so many and he will missed by all. We share our deepest condolences with his mother, father and family.”
