Hillary Clinton Projected Winner In Barely Covered D.C. Primary

Hillary Clinton is the projected winner over Bernie Sanders in the final Democratic primary of the season, handily taking the 20 delegates in the Washington D.C. contest that was all but ignored by news stations still focused on Sunday’s horror in Orlando.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, before turning her show’s focus tonight to the private meeting between Clinton and Sanders today, called Clinton the projected winner, with 79 percent of the votes cast in 99 percent of precincts reported. CNN mostly stayed with its Orlando coverage through both Anderson Cooper’s and Don Lemon’s primetime programs tonight, with Lemon showcasing an exclusive interview with the ex-wife of the Orlando shooter. (During the 11:30 pm ET segment of his CNN Tonight, Lemon turned to politics, hosting a discussion about Clinton, Sanders and Donald Trump.)

As CNN noted on its website earlier today, “the contest doesn’t change the general election match-up,” with Clinton having “clinched” the nomination last week. Still, the last Dem primary of the season likely would have drawn at least some attention — if only for Sanders’ continued refusal to drop out of the race — had it not been for the ongoing coverage of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history that left 49 people dead.
