Helen Mirren has joined the cast of Fast 8, the latest in Universal’s fast-moving franchise that F. Gary Gray is directing. That makes two Oscar Best Actress winners on the pic, joining Charlize Theron who also is playing a new character. Mirren confirmed the deal to join the movie in an interview with Elle, saying “I said, ‘I’ll be in it, but only if I’m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.’ But we’ll see. We’ll see how it transpires.” Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese and more are among the returnees for the latest installment, which has an April 14, 2017 release date and is in production now.
New Line is in development on The Nun, a feature film spinoff based on a character from Warner Bros/New Line’s The Conjuring 2. David Leslie Johnson has been hired to write a script and James Wan and Peter Safran are producing the pic, which is now in development after Conjuring 2 grossed $40 million in its first weekend at the North American box office.
