Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures’ Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas has been pushed by a full year from November 10, 2017, to November 9, 2018. This isn’t anything to be alarmed by, rather the nature of animation projects. Getting them right takes time, and the next-best corridor for this film was the following year.
The Grinch has no head-to-head competition in its new slot, but will tangle with Warner Bros’ Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 on November 16, 2018.
Illumination was a huge focal point in Universal’s CinemaCon presentation, with the studio breaking news about Benedict Cumberbatch providing the voice to the green, hairy holiday thief. It’s a whole new animated take on the children’s classic. Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney direct from Michael LeSieur’s adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ book. Illumination’s Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and Scott Mosier are producing with Audrey Geisel and Chris Renaud executive producing.
Uni made a live-action big screen take on The Grinch starring Jim Carrey back in 2000, and that Ron Howard-directed film wound up being the highest-grossing film of the year with $260M domestic (and $345.1M worldwide).
