EXCLUSIVE: The day after its U.S. premiere — and ahead of tonight’s Australia bow — Cleverman has been renewed for Season 2. SundanceTV and Oz’s ABC TV said today that production on the genre drama’s next six hourlong episodes will begin later this year in Sydney.
Set in the near future, Cleverman revolves around two estranged indigenous brothers (Hunter Page-Lochard and Rob Collins) who are forced together to fight for their own survival as otherworldly creatures also emerge into their “real world” dystopian landscape. Game of Thrones‘ Iain Glen also stars alongside Stef Dawson (The Hunger Games franchise).
“The world that Ryan Griffen and the rest of the team behind Cleverman have created is a perfect blend of timeless mythology seen through the prism of a near future lens,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV. “This is a series that sophisticated genre fans will no doubt fall in love with.”
Directors Wayne Blair and Leah Purcell return for Season 2, which will be penned by Stuart Page, Jane Allen, Jada Alberts, Justine Gillmer and Griffen, who came up with the original concept. Executive producers Sally Riley, Ben Grant, Kylie du Fresne, Wayne Blair, Angela Littlejohn, Adam Fratto, Jan David Frouman, Amelie Kienlin and Irena Ignatiew.
The first season of Cleverman will air on BBC Three in the UK.
