Ruben Fleischer (NBC’s Superstore) is set to direct and executive produce the opening two episodes of Santa Clarita Diet, Netflix’s upcoming single-camera comedy series starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. The show, from creator Victor Fresco, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Tracy Katsky’s Kapital-based KatCo, is set for 2017 debut.
In Santa Clarita Diet, Joel (Olyphant) and Sheila (Barrymore) are husband and wife Realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita, until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending both their lives down a road of death and destruction — but in a good way. Ricardo Chavira co-stars.
Fresco, who will serve as showrunner, executive produces with Barrymore, Olyphant, Kaplan, Katsky, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell. Nancy Juvonen is a producer.
This marks the latest collaboration between Fleischer and Kaplan. Fleischer most recently directed Kapital Entertainment’s ABC comedy pilot The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport, which is in serious contention for a series pickup. He also previously worked with Kaplan on the first incarnation of paranormal comedy Strange Calls — based on an Australian format — at ABC.
Zombieland and Gangster Squad helmer Fleischer is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Warren Dern.
