Lesley Freeman must like companies with three-letter names: She was just named Chief Legal officer for MGM, leaving HBO where she was SVP of Legal Affairs.

Moving to Los Angeles, she’ll report to MGM chief Gary Barber and oversee all of the studio’s legal matters. Freeman will replace General Counsel Scott Packman, who the company says will step down in August after 14 years “having decided he wanted to pursue other career opportunities.”

“Scott shared with me that he was interested in moving on some time ago and we appreciate his flexibility in staying on during a transition,” Barber says. “He has been a trusted and valued executive and we are sorry to see him go.”

Freeman was at HBO for a decade, specializing in legal maters involving film programming, home entertainment/digital program distribution and domestic joint venture/strategic investments and M&A. Before joining the Time Warner unit, she represented studios, production companies, networks and other entertainment entities in Los Angeles at O’Melveny & Myers.

“Lesley is a consummate professional who is well respected in the legal community and has a deep understanding of the issues surrounding our ever-evolving industry,” Barber says.
