UPDATED 8:10 PM: Just over three hours after it began, the drama at the KTLA tower ended as the unidentified man climbed down on his own around 7:55 PM. He was taken into police custody upon reaching the ground.
Original article, 4:53 PM: A man began climbing the tower at KTLA-TV’s studio in Hollywood around 4:45 PM today, and LAPD Hollywood Precinct officials tell Deadline that they have closed Sunset Boulevard between Vine Street and Bronson Avenue. Police and fire authorities are on the scene as the man — wearing a green hoodie and baseball cap — appeared to be climbing higher. Authorities are on a nearby rooftop and are communicating with the man, who at the moment is standing atop one of the giant “5” signs on the tower. KTLA is reporting that he is 80 feet above the ground, at times has been seen smoking and has told police he is “fine.” Authorities have placed air cushions around the base of the tower. We’ll keep you updated with details as they are made available.
