UPDATE with details of event and video: After yesterday’s pre-Cannes Film Festival stunt for The Angry Birds Movie, today marks another first — and also a last. Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick took to the Palais this afternoon for a footage presentation of DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls. Timberlake and Kendrick, who lead the film’s voice cast, dueted on Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” with Timberlake on acoustic guitar.

This marks the first time the Palais has been used as a promotional stage for a fest-approved footage screening — and notably before the official proceedings kick off. But it also marks the last time that DWA chief Jeffrey Katzenberg will be on hand to tubthump a film from the studio which he just sold to Comcast for $3.8B.
Katzenberg has long been a fixture in Cannes where fest chief Thierry Frémaux made waves back in 2001 by putting Shrek into the main competition. Since then, the exec has brought such films to town for prime photo ops and attention-grabbing stunts as Shark Tale — with Will Smith and Angelina Jolie riding an inflatable shark up to the beach; Bee Movie — and Jerry Seinfeld zip-lining off the Carlton; and How To Train Your Dragon 2, which saw Toothless and Cate Blanchett stroll the red carpet.
Today, Katzenberg is in town to premiere 25 minutes of footage from the musical Trolls, directed by Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn, which begins international rollout in October. Timberlake and Kendrick have been on the road already for the picture, visiting London and Berlin this week. Timberlake next heads to Stockholm to perform on the Eurovision song contest Saturday evening. As for Katzenberg, once the dust settles from the Comcast deal, he’s headed to pastures new.
