EXCLUSIVE: Focus Features has closed a deal for the majority of key international territories on Andrea Arnold’s American Honey. A24 had already acquired the film for domestic. Among the major markets Focus has now taken are the UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Italy and Scandinavia. The Cannes competition pic is a coming-of-age teen tale that stars Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf and Riley Keough. Parts & Labor, Pulse Films, and ManDown Pictures are producers. The deals all come ahead of the official screening on Sunday.
The pic revolves around law-breaking teenagers who are chasing the American Dream: selling magazine subscriptions by day, partying by night. It’s told through the eyes of Star (Lane), a new recruit to the group who falls into a relationship with one of its leaders. It was shot on location in the Midwest and is the first U.S. feature for Arnold, a UK director who won an Oscar in 2003 for her short film Wasp.
The project was co-developed by Film4 and financed by Maven Pictures, the BFI and Film4. Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales. CAA repped the domestic sale to A24.
