Jason Reitman, a four-time Oscar nominee for his indie-centric films, came to Deadline’s first-ever Contenders event for the Emmys last month at the DGA and talked about how his new Hulu series, Casual, is very much in the mode of an indie movie.
The Golden Globe -nominated dramedy is about a bachelor brother who finds himself once again living under the same roof as his newly divorced sister as they both try to navigate the world of dating, even as she is bringing up a teen daughter. It has been an instant hit for Hulu and is about to embark on a second season of shows beginning to air on June 7. Executive producer and sometimes director of the series Reitman sat on the Contenders panel with his fellow EP and chief writer Zander Lehmann, who explains how the premise of Casual actually came from his own life when suddenly his sister started living with his best friend. Lehmann says all the storylines so far have come from pure honesty in the writers room, as they take actual events from their own dating experiences and turn them into television. The pair also have high praise for their cast including Michaela Watkins, Tommy Dewy and Tara Lynne Barr.
