And then they were gone.
As the Golden State Warriors fell 108-102 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the NBA Western Conference Finals on TNT, ABC’s Castle (1.3/4) and CBS’ Mike & Molly both ended their runs last night. While a loss for the reigning champ Warriors, last night’s primetime game was a winner for TNT with a 6.7 overnight rating. Topping cable, that’s up 33% over the last night TNT aired an NBA Playoffs Western Conference Finals Game 1 in 2014, and it’s the best any conference finals opener has done in five years.
After all the turmoil on Castle involving dropped cast and a potential reduced next season, the Stana Katic- and Nathan Fillion-starring dramady tried to wrap it all up with this eighth-season ender. Ratingswise, the just cancelled Castle was up 18% in adults 18-49 from its May 9 show to hit a season high. However, finale-to-finale, things were more even, with the very last show down 7% in the demo from its Season 7 finale of May 11, 2015. As things stand, with last year as the previous low, last night’s Castle was the worst a finale for the series has ever done. Lead-in Dancing With The Stars (1.8/6) was up a tenth from last week. With 11.53 million viewers, DWTS was easily the night’s most-watched show.

For Mike & Molly, it was another double shot at 8 PM (1.4/5) and the finale at 8:30 PM (1.6/6). Both saw a dip from their May 9 offerings, with the early show down 13% from last week and the series ender slipping a tenth. Compared to last year’s Season 5 finale of May 18, Monday’s series finale was down 16% in the key demo. There was a high in the 8.32 million who watched the last M&M – that was an audience Season 6 high for the series. The rest of CBS’ night saw The Odd Couple (1.3/4) even with last week and the soon-coming-to-an-end Person Of Interest (0.9/3) down a tenth.
With one of the best lines of this season (“Baby has your sense of humor, laughing at others’ tears!”), a wedding, a shooting and more, Jane The Virgin (0.4/1) ended its second season in full flight. In the demo, the CW series was up 8% over its May 11 episode while lead-in Reign (0.3/1) was also up a tenth. In contrast to its first season ender of May 11, 2015, last night’s Jane was down 20% among adults 18-49.
As is usual on Mondays, NBC won the night in the 18-49s with the Comcast-owned net snagging a 1.8/6 rating. ABC was tops again in viewership with a total audience of 10.28 million. Even with last week (like its lead-out Blindspot (1.3/4)), The Voice (2.1/7) was the night’s top rated show.
Heading towards its own season finale, Fox’s Gotham (1.3/4) was up a tenth from last week, while the struggling Houdini & Doyle (0.6/2) was unchanged.
