A futuristic comedy project is heating up the cable/digital space. A half-hour pitch from comedy writer Sonny Lee (Silicon Valley) and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg has sparked bidding. I hear there are at least six networks involved, with multiple production commitments on the table.
Conceived by Lee, the comedy is set in a future where AI beings rule, with humans in a role similar to house pets, loyal dogs looking for ways to please their owner. The comedy is said to be similar in tone to Rogen and Goldberg’s disaster movie This Is the End, which is why Lee reached out to the duo for collaboration.
Rogen and Goldberg have been quickly expanding into the scripted series space with AMC series Preacher and Hulu pilot Future Man. Both shows are through Sony TV, while the Sonny Lee comedy does not have a studio attached.
Lee majored in Economics at University of Pennsylvania but was drawn to entertainment. He got a job as a page at NBC that became an entry point to a writing career. Lee’s series credits include It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, 2 Broke Girls, Silicon Valley, and most recently new ABC comedy The Real O’Neals. He is repped by WME, Rogen and Goldberg are with UTA.
