“The punchline is true about me: I did the dumb thing. But I did a lot of good things too.” Sometime in the near future, if it hasn’t happened already, Anthony Weiner’s case will be included in a Politics 101 textbook. Maybe he’ll get a whole chapter — because when a rising political star crashes this hard because of something this dumb, future generations need to learn from it. Or at least giggle about it.
Here’s a trailer for Weiner, which won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and gets a theatrical release May 20 via Sundance Selects. It tells the couldn’t-be-scripted-better story of the congressman who tweeted a picture of his bulging underwear, resigned under pressure, then ran for mayor of NYC. The film follows his 2013 mayoral campaign through planning sessions, platform speeches and run-ins with the media — “I can’t believe I gave the press the finger” — and the electorate. Re the latter: One guy tells Weiner, “You’re a real scumbag, Anthony.” The candidate whips around and replies, “Takes one to know one, jackass.” Ooooh, burn!
It all plays out like some kind of fictional mockumentary, but it’s not. We think. Produced and directed by Josh Kreigman and Elyse Steinberg, the film will hit VOD six days after its big-screen bow. Check out the trailer, and tell us what you think. Just don’t sext us your thoughts, please.
