AMC jumps into this year’s Limited Series race big time with The Night Manager, the first original television production of a John le Carre novel in over 20 years. To say it is an event is an understatement, as the panel explained at Deadline’s first-ever Emmy Contenders event April 10. As part of AMC’s presentation at the DGA theatre to a full house of Television Academy and Guild members, stars Tom Hiddleston (in the title role) and Hugh Laurie (as international illegal arms trader Richard Roper) were joined by producers Stephen Garrett and le Carre’s son Simon Cornwell. The six-part mini begins tonight on AMC, simultaneously launching the cable net’s move into original Tuesday night programming. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier, The Night Manager has the scope and look of an expensive big screen movie and was shot on locations around the world. For spy movie fans and le Carre aficionados, it should be must-see TV over the next six Tuesday evenings. Olivia Coleman, Elizabeth Dibecki and Tom Hollander co-star.
