The Blacklist co-star Ryan Eggold has closed a deal to play the male lead opposite Famke Janssen in NBC’s proposed spinoff from the thriller drama series, reprising his role as covert operative Tom Keen aka Jacob Phelps.
If the spinoff goes forward, Eggold will star on the new series, with likely crossover appearances on The Blacklist. If it doesn’t go, Eggold will return to the mothership series, resuming his duties as a regular.
The Blacklist episode that will serve as a formal planted spinoff is Episode 322 — airing May 12 — written by The Blacklist creator/executive producer Jon Bokenkamp and exec producer/showrunner John Eisendrath and directed by Michael Dinner.
Form what I’ve heard, the spinoff focuses on the relationship between Susan “Scottie” Halsted (Janssen) and Tom (Eggold), which is said to be similar to the one between Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) and Liz (Megan Boone) on the original series, with Scottie as Tom’s handler.
In the spinoff, Janssen and Eggold are being joined by The Blacklist recurring player Edi Gathegi and new addition Tawny Cypress.
The spinoff was created by Bokenkamp and Eisendrath, who executive produce with The Blacklist exec producers John Davis and John Fox.
90210 alum Eggold, repped by Gersh, Untitled and David Matlof, recently co-starred in History’s Sons Of Liberty.
