Here is the latest trailer for The BFG, Steven Spielberg’s take on the fantastical Roald Dahl tale. There’s plenty that’s familiar to fans of the director’s films: adorable kid in peril, streaming light through windows, John Williams flourishes, a clutch of giants. Wait, one of those things is not like the others.

bfgbookOne late London night as 10-year-old Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) is towing her cat across the floor on the covers, the girl is scooped up by an enormous hand that comes in through the window. The appendage belongs to the BFG (Mark Rylance), a 24-footer who whisks Sophie away to Giant Country. “Why did you take me?” she asks him. “Because I hears your lonely heart,” he says kindly. Things are swell until some not-so-friendly giants arrive, with decidedly unhappy names like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement). They’re twice as big and have been known to snack on people.

Sophie and the BFG soon head back to London town to alert the Queen (Penelope Wilton) of the situation — but can they convince her and her maid (Rebecca Hall) that giants exist?

Disney co-financed The BFG with Walden Media and will release it on July 1 in the U.S. The late Melissa Mathison penned the screenplay for the Amblin/Reliance pic, which is Spielberg’s first directing gig for Disney. While we wait to see if the DreamWorks Studios film will be an Official Selection at Cannes, have a look at the trailer and let us know what you think.
