The backdrop has moved to Paris from the Scottish highlands, and that change of location seems to have helped deliver ratings gold for Outlander. The Season 2 debut of the Starz drama based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels snared 1.46 million viewers on Saturday.
Up 102% from the Season 1 premiere of August 9, 2014, Saturday’s Season 2 debut is the best any Starz series has done in a series or season opener. The previous high belonged to Power, which had 1.43 million for its Season 2 debut on June 6. Over multiple plays, Outlander, from Sony TV, drew 2.68 million viewers this weekend.
The Season 2 opener of the series executive produced by Ronald D. Moore was up 19% in total viewers from last year’s Season 1 return of April 4. The heavily promoted opener also saw a rise of 49% over the Season 1 finale of May 30, 2015.
Adding to the premium cabler’s weekend joy, the premiere of The Girlfriend Experience drew about 363,000 total viewers on a very competitive April 10.That comes as all 13 episodes were also made available for binge watching on Starz’s digital platforms this weekend.
Over multiple linear plays Sunday, the Steven Soderbergh-EP’d series somewhat based on his 2009 feature had 1.5 million viewers – the best any Starz series has done in a debut on its various platforms since the 1.76 million Outlander brought in on its opening weekend in August 2014.
