It took a few extra weeks of negotiations, but New Girl has secured a renewal for a sixth season at Fox. I hear a two-year pickup also was considered in the talks, which encountered a few bumps before a deal was a reached for a one-season pickup.
New Girl, created by Liz Meriwether, is Fox’s longest-running live-action comedy on the air, and it makes money for the company as it is produced by 20th Century Fox TV. New Girl was one of the first broadcast comedy series to ditch the traditional off-network syndication route for a rich deal at Netflix. It is also a legacy show for Fox — it put the network back on the comedy map, giving it its first live-action hit in a while with a monster ratings debut.
“Every network comedy should aspire to what Liz Meriwether is achieving in New Girl, with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling,” said Fox’s David Madden. “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate New Girl on reaching its milestone 100th episode and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”
New Girl joins fellow Fox comedies Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Last Man On Earth, which also have been renewed. The only remaining Fox half-hour series still in contention are freshmen Grandfathered and The Grinder. Both of them are in limbo, with likely one at best making it back next season. (Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life and Bordertown are not expected to continue.)
New Girl, from 20th TV and Chernin Entertainment, was created by Meriwether who exec produces with Brett Baer, Dave Finkel, Jake Kasdan, Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope. Meriwether, Baer and Finkel are co-showrunners/writers.
New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone. Guest stars include Megan Fox, Damon Wayans, Jr., David Walton, Nasim Pedrad, Sonequa Martin-Green, Kal Penn, Rob Riggle, Meghan Rath, Nora Dunn, Kim Wayans and Peter Gallagher.
