EXCLUSIVE: Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and mega-producer Irwin Winkler are reteaming to develop a feature film based on the Dwayne J Clark’s book My Mother, My Son. Oscar winner Winkler (Rocky, Raging Bull) will co-write and direct the drama based on the 2012 memoir centering on Clark, an entrepreneur in the senior living industry, whose mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and became a resident of one of his memory-care communities.
Even though Clark’s career revolved around elderly care and memory loss as CEO of Aegis Living, which runs 27 care communities in three states, he still had to come to terms with the painful realization that his mother would one day forget who he was. Alzheimer’s is now the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S.

This will mark the fourth collaboration between Winkler and E/F/O. They include Martin Scorsese’s upcoming passion project Silence which is now in postproduction and David Mamet adaptation Speed-The-Plow. Winkler and Jose Ruisanchez are co-writing My Mother, My Son, and Randall Emmett, George Furla and Winkler are producing. Tyler Jon Olson will co-produce.
“We knew this was a story that needed to be told and with Irwin and Jose adapting the screenplay and Irwin directing, it behooved us to commit to it as well,” Emmett said.
Added Clark: “It’s not easy to share the most difficult moments of your life on the big screen, but with this partnership, I believe my story will be told with a passionate sense of purpose that I hope will inspire millions and let them know they are not alone.”
As a producer, Winkler won the Best Picture Oscar in 1977 for the original Rocky, and his credits are legion: In addition to Raging Bull, he produced They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, The Gambler (both the original and the remake), New York, New York, GoodFellas, The Wolf Of Wall Street and Creed among many others. His last directing effort was the 2006 Iraq War drama Home Of The Brave.
E/F/O is also in post on the Bruce Willis-starrer Marauders and it just wrapped shooting on the Arnold Schwarzenegger-Scoot McNairy pic 478 produced by Darren Aronofsky.
