Grasshopper Film has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Robert Greene’s documentary Kate Plays Christine, which won a Special Jury Prize for writing at Sundance this year. Billed as a nonfiction psychological thriller, it follows actress Kate Lyn Sheil (House of Cards) as she prepares for her next role playing Christine Chubbuck, a Florida newscaster who committed suicide live on-air in 1974. As she investigates Chubbuck’s story, she becomes increasingly obsessed with her subject.
Newbie distributor Grasshopper, founded by former Cinema Guild distribution exec Ryan Krivoshey, plans a summer theatrical release. The pic joins the company’s 2016 slate that includes Asghar Farhadi’s Fireworks Wednesday and Hong Sangsoo’s Right Now, Wrong Then among others.
The deal was negotiated by Krivoshey with Linzee Troubh of Cinetic and producers Douglas Tirola and Susan Bedusa of 4th Row Films.
