Popular crime-fighting clergyman drama, Grantchester, has been renewed for a third season by ITV. Season 2 is currently airing in the U.S. on PBS’ Masterpiece while the mystery series concluded its S2 run in the UK on Wednesday evening. Grantchester is a Kudos and Masterpiece co-production for ITV based on The Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcie and adapted by writer Daisy Coulam. Its first season in 2014 delivered an average 6.6M viewers and a 24 share on ITV. The second has won its slot every week in the UK, and is currently consolidating at 6.6M viewers and a 26 share. Diederick Santer has executive produced and Emma Kingsman-Lloyd has produced both seasons. They will return with Kingsman-Lloyd as Series Producer. Coulam will also be an executive producer on Season 3.
Via subsidiary Thema, Canal Plus Group has acquired Alterna’TV from Eutelsat Americas. Alterna’TV is a Miami-based content distribution company that provides principally Latin American, Spanish-language channels to cable and internet TV operators in the U.S. It currently reaches over 10M subscribers across the Americas. The transaction, of which financial details were not disclosed, includes a long-term agreement for the lease of capacity on the Eutelsat 113 West A and 117 West A satellites. The expanding Canal Plus Group is controlled by Vivendi, which is soon due to announce a deal with Mediaset. Through the Alterna’TV acquisition, Canal reinforces its position in North and Latin America. Thema is already active on five continents with a portfolio of over 100 channels. Alterna currently airs a vast array of programming and serves a market whose needs are “not fully met by the current programming available in the United States,” the company says. Spanish viewers “are in constant search for programming alternatives that connect them to their origins and offer a deeper meaning into their own culture.”
