CNN viewers apparently prefer the rad ’80s over the groovy ’60s and disco ’70s. With last night’s premiere of The Eighties, CNN’s latest decade-exploring docu series ranked No. 1 among adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Fast National data. The series’ two-hour “Raised on Television” episode attracted 598k in the key 25-54 demo, with Fox News following at 383k and MSNBC at 300k.
In total viewers, CNN topped MSNBC (1.42m vs. 1.34 million), while Fox News beat both with a 1.99 million average.
The Eighties bow was the second-most-watched CNN original series premiere ever in both total viewers and adults 25-54, behind only Race for the White House: Kennedy vs. Nixon. Last night’s episode was the No. 3 CNN . The Eighties (598k) premiere was also up by triple digits compared to The Sixties debut (284k, +111%) and The Seventies (291k, +105%) among adults 25-54, as was up in total viewers as well: Eighties/1.415m. vs. Seventies/887k vs. Sixties/1.390m).
The Eighties is produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman in association with HBO and producer Mark Herzog. Episode 2, “The AIDS Crisis,” will air at 9 PM Thursday, April 7.
