CNN has hired Variety’s longtime TV critic/columnist Brian Lowry as a senior writer to cover media from the cable news network’s Los Angeles operation. Lowry will become part of a media team that also includes senior media correspondent and Reliable Sources host Brian Stelter, who joined from The New York Times in fall 2013, and senior reporter Dylan Byers, who joined CNN from Politico in September.
Lowry will cover streaming, TV and film via longform writing and analysis. His last day at Variety will be April 22, and he starts at CNN on April 26.
Lowry has been Variety’s TV columnist and critic since 2003, after seven years at the Los Angeles Times as reporter and columnist. Before that, he had another seven-year stint at Variety. Lowry also has been a contributor to National Public Radio and FoxSports.com and was a co-host of TV Guide Network’s Square Off, a weekly talk program about the television business. He also has written two authorized companion guides to the Fox series The X-Files.
