Alcon clearly has high hopes for the still-untitled science fiction pic – that new date places the Blade Runner sequel smack in the middle of prime awards season. But also pits it against some major competition: 10/6/17 is the placeholder date for an untitled Fox/Marvel film – possibly the recently-announced but still unscheduled Deadpool sequel – as well as an untitled WB event film. It looks like October is turning into the new May.
Set several decades after the 1982 original, the Blade Runner sequel sees Harrison Ford returning, joined by Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright and Dave Bautista. Denis Villeneuve (Sicario) is directing from a script by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. The film will continue from the original story, itself an adaptation of the Phillip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Johnson and Kosove, with the late Bud Yorkin receiving a producer credit.
Warner Bros is releasing Blade Runner 2 in North America and Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute in all overseas territories in all media.
