BAFTA Los Angeles said today that Ang Lee will receive this year’s John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing. The filmmaker will be honored at the 2016 British Academy Britannia Awards, set for October 28 at the Beverly Hilton. Lee’s next film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, begins international rollout on November 10 and releases domestically on November 11; right inside the awards season corridor.
A two-time Best Director Oscar winner, for Life Of Pi (2012) and Brokeback Mountain (2005), Lee also has scored two BAFTA David Lean Awards for Direction — for Brokeback and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). Sense And Sensibility (1995), was a BAFTA Best Film winner. His Taking Woodstock (2009) and The Ice Storm (1997) both competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Other directing credits include Lust, Caution (2007), Hulk (2003) and The Wedding Banquet (1993). His next project is Thrilla In Manila, a 3D pic about the historic heavyweight title fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. It’s set for 2018.
“Ang Lee is truly one of the great visionary directors of our time, with a remarkable international career that continually demonstrates bold choices and provocative perspectives,” says BAFTA LA Chairman Kieran Breen. “From Sense And Sensibility to Life Of Pi, Mr Lee has had a special place in BAFTA’s heart, and we are looking forward to honoring his remarkable career at this year’s British Academy Britannia Awards.”
Previous recipients of the John Schlesinger Britannia Award include Sam Mendes, Mike Newell, Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan, David Yates, Quentin Tarantino and Kathryn Bigelow.
The awards evening is BAFTA’s big night out in Hollywood which honors individuals who have dedicated their careers to advancing the art forms of the moving image in the U.S., UK and beyond. Proceeds from the gala ceremony support BAFTA Los Angeles’ ongoing education, scholarship, community outreach and archival projects.
