Cashing in on the Oscar spoils, Open Road took Spotlight out to its widest reach since opening in November. The Best Picture winner did a pretty good job in more than 1,200 theaters grossing $1.83M. Sony Classics added 29 locations for its Best Foreign Picture winner Son Of Saul. And among openers, Broad Green Pictures bowed Terrence Malick’s latest film, Knight Of Cups with Christian Bale and a long list of stars. The film had the weekend’s second best per theater average following Disney’s Zootopia.
Malick’s Knight Of Cups opened in four New York and Los Angeles theaters over the weekend grossing $56,688. That put the title at a $14,172 average, the weekend’s second best PTA, but not earth shattering. The Thin Red Line, his highest grossing film to date, ($36.4M cume) had a $56,506 average when it opened in five theaters way back in ’98. More spectacularly, The Tree Of Life (2011) opened to a $93,230 average in four theaters, eventually grossing just over $13.3 million.
'Blackbird' And 'The Secrets We Keep' Opens In Theaters, Janelle Monae Thriller 'Antebellum' Debuts, Merawi Gerima's 'Residue' Hits Netflix - Specialty Streaming Preview
Not included in the weekend’s figures was its Thursday premiere ahead of the weekend in Los Angeles. Malick wanted fans to attend along with the VIPs. At $15 a pop, fans shelled out a total of $19,470 for the event.
Malick’s previous release, To The Wonder with Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem and Rachel McAdams, grossed over $587K theatrically, though the 2013 Magnolia release was a day and date roll out. His 2005 New Line release The New World with Colin Farrell grossed over $12.7 million domestically.
Other openers were comparatively modest. Trapped opened in three theaters via Abramorama/Ro*Co grossing $20,385, averaging $6,786, while Kino Lorber opened Songs My Brothers Taught Me in a single location grossing $3,680. And International Film Circuit opened Colliding Dreams in four theaters, taking in nearly $16K for a $3,993 average.
Spotlight, Brooklyn and Room grabbed audiences following their Oscar nominations for Best Picture, and Tom McCarthy’s winner Spotlight was expanded by Open Road by 542 more theaters than the previous weekend, taking the title to its widest reach to date. It grossed an estimated $1,831,889 in 1,227 theaters, averaging a decent $1,493 given that it is in its 18th weekend of release. An Oscar may be priceless, but box office comes down to numbers, and Spotlight‘s bump wasn’t huge.
A24 added 35 locations for Room in the wake of Brie Larson’s win for Best Actress. The title appears to have almost maxed out its staying power, but it still rolled in over $445K Friday to Sunday, giving it a $565 average.
Music-related docs played to packed houses this weekend at the True/False Film Festival in Columbia, MO, including Sonita, a German/Iranian title that had 1,700 people giving a standing ovation, as well as Ido Haar’s Presenting Princess Shaw (a Magnolia pick up) which also got a rapturous reception.
Brooklyn didn’t take home any Oscars, but still had a good run. Searchlight played the film in 190 fewer theaters than the previous weekend, grossing $390K, averaging $1,359. Spotlight’s 18 week cume is over $37.22 million.
