Simon & Schuster has acquired My Own Words, a compendium of essays and speeches by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the CBS-owned publisher said today in New York. The book will be released prior to a biography of the outspoken Supreme Court Associate Justice that S&S also is publishing.

Ginsberg has been a heavyweight on the liberal end of the top bench since President Bill Clinton appointed her in 1993. She was most recently in the news for eulogizing her political opposite and good friend, Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last month. Deadline announced exclusively last year that Natalie Portman will play Ginsburg in Marielle Heller’s developing biopic On The Basis Of Sex.

The book will be Ginsburg’s first since joining the Supreme Court. World rights were acquired by Alice Mayhew, VP and Editorial Director of Simon & Schuster, from ICM Partners’ Esther Newberg. The book will be available in hardcover, ebook, and audio in January 2017.

“Justice Ginsburg is one of the most important and articulate legal thinkers and interpreters in the country,” Mayhew said in the announcement. “She is also a witty and engaged writer and speaker, and I am personally delighted to have another opera lover on board.”

Ruth Bader GinsburgS&S says My Own Words will cover a wide range of subjects, including gender equality, the workings of the Supreme Court, her Jewish heritage, the law and lawyers in opera and the value of looking beyond U.S. shores when interpreting the U.S. Constitution.

“Throughout her life Justice Ginsburg has been (and continues to be) a prolific writer and public speaker,” S&S said. “The writings will be selected by Justice Ginsburg and her authorized biographers Mary Hartnett (Adjunct Professor, Georgetown Law) and Wendy W. Williams (Professor Emerita, Georgetown Law). Justice Ginsburg will write an introduction to the book, and Hartnett and Williams will write introductions to each of the chapters, giving brief biographical context and including limited quotes from a few of the hundreds of interviews they have conducted for their forthcoming biography of Justice Ginsburg, which Simon & Schuster will publish at a date to be determined.”
