Martin Mull has signed on to a key role in A Futile and Stupid Gesture, the upcoming Netflix film based on the 2006 nonfiction book that charts the troubled life of National Lampoon co-founder Doug Kenney. The film also examines the impact of the comedy magazine and the media empire it spawned during the 1970s and ’80s with Mull is set to play “Modern Doug,” an imagined, older version of Kenney, who died in 1980 after falling off a cliff in Hawaii under unclear circumstances. Will Forte plays the younger version of Kenney.
Wet Hot American Summer‘s David Wain directs from a script by Michael Colton & John Aboud, who are also on as executive producers. Ed Helms, Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm also executive produce, with Peter Principato and Jonathan Stern Producing. Mull next will be seen in a recurring role on the upcoming fourth season of HBO’s Veep, which premieres April 24, and most recently co-starred on Seth MacFarlane’s Fox sitcom Dads. Other film and television roles include Arrested Development, Two and a Half Men, Jingle All the Way, Mrs. Doubtfire and many others. He’s repped by Gersh.

Liana Liberato has joined the cast of the dark comedy To the Bone, the feature directorial debut of TV writer Marti Noxon based on her own experiences struggling with anorexia. The film stars Lily Collins in the lead role as Ellen, with Liberato portraying Kelly, Ellen’s half sister and her physical antithesis. To the Bone also stars Keanu Reeves as Dr. William Beckham, an unorthodox doctor who pushes Ellen to choose life and commit to getting better. Filming on the pic is set to begin this week in Los Angeles.
The first film from Karina Miller and Talal AlAbbar’s Sparkhouse Media, it’s produced by Miller, alongside Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis of Mockingbird Pictures. Miller is also financing through Sparkhouse Media. Liberato recently wrapped the coming-of-age drama Novitiate with Melissa Leo. She’s repped by CAA and Management 360.
