Fred Armisen will attempt to kill the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That’s the big news today out of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Wondercon panel, where producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller announced that Armisen is voicing longstanding TMNT supervillain Krang in the sequel to the 2014 blockbuster. That plus a trailer and brand new footage were unveiled tonight at the Microsoft Theater, bringing the first day of Wondercon to a close.
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Krang is a warlord from another dimension who exists as what amounts to a floating brain inside an android exoskeleton. It’s one of the more ridiculous parts of the Turtles canon, a good fit for a comedian. “Anyone who’s a fan of Krang will love what Fred is doing. It’s unbelievable,” Form said during the panel, which was also attended by costars Megan Fox and Stephen Amell.
As for the never before seen footage, it featured a highly choreographed action sequence in which April O’Neil (Fox) finds herself on the run from four ninja star-throwing men in black, only to be saved by Casey Jones (Amell) in full hockey gear. Asked at one point during the panel whether he had hockey experience, Amell quipped, “I’m Canadian, man. That’s like asking people with feet if they walk.” We’ll post the clip when Paramount makes the footage public.
This year, WonderCon, the sister confab to San Diego Comic-Con, has moved from Anaheim to the Microsoft Theater downtown and the nearby LA Convention Center, and will run through Sunday, March 27.
