Nearly a year and a half after Katie Holmes was set to return as Jackie Kennedy Onassis in The Kennedys: After Camelot, the miniseries finally has its Ted Kennedy. Matthew Perry will star as the Massachusetts senator in Reelz’s follow-up to its 2011 mini The Kennedys. The four-hour project is set to air in spring 2017.
The Odd Couple star and Friends alum will topline the long-gestating miniseries as the youngest brother of the Kennedy family, who served nearly 47 years in the Senate. Focusing on Ted Kennedy in the years following the assassinations of his brothers Jack and Bobby, the mini depicts his complicated public and private life as he tries to live up to his family’s political ambitions and also fill a male leadership void in the family. Also featured is Kennedy Onassis, who despite her desire for privacy had become perhaps the most famous and admired woman in the world. Her ties to the Kennedy family remained strong throughout her life, and her relationship with her brother-in-law Ted grew ever closer as they turned to each another for support. Holmes also played Jackie O in The Kennedys.
“As the Reelz brand has evolved to tell the real stories of celebrities’ lives, there’s no bigger celebrity family than the Kennedys, and we’re proud to continue this amazing and dramatic story that began with The Kennedys miniseries,” Reelz CEO Stan Hubbard said. “The Kennedys have inspired more movies, books, TV shows and documentaries than any other American family.”
Based on biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli’s After Camelot: A Personal History of the Kennedy Family 1968 to the Present, The Kennedys: After Camelot hails from Muse Entertainment. Filming is set for the spring in Toronto.
