Lilly Wachowski, co-director of such features as Jupiter Ascending, Cloud Atlas and the Matrix trilogy along with Netflix’s Sense8, announced today that she is transgender. Her sibling and filmmaking partner Lana Wachowski transitioned several years ago. Fearing that she was about to be outed by a tabloid, Lilly (pictured), penned a lengthy letter for Windy City Times in which the filmmaker (formerly Andy Wachowski) speaks frankly about what it means to transition and about the challenges faced by transgender people.
Here is a portion of her post:
Being transgender is not easy. We live in a majority-enforced gender binary world. This means when you’re transgender you have to face the hard reality of living the rest of your life in a world that is openly hostile to you.
I am one of the lucky ones. Having the support of my family and the means to afford doctors and therapists has given me the chance to actually survive this process. Transgender people without support, means and privilege do not have this luxury. And many do not survive. In 2015, the transgender murder rate hit an all-time high in this country. A horrifying disproportionate number of the victims were trans women of color. These are only the recorded homicides so, since trans people do not all fit in the tidy gender binary statistics of murder rates, it means the actual numbers are higher.
And though we have come a long way since Silence of the Lambs, we continue to be demonized and vilified in the media where attack ads portray us as potential predators to keep us from even using the goddamn bathroom. The so-called bathroom bills that are popping up all over this country do not keep children safe, they force trans people into using bathrooms where they can be beaten and or murdered. We are not predators, we are prey.
So yeah, I’m transgender.
And yeah, I’ve transitioned.
I’m out to my friends and family. Most people at work know too. Everyone is cool with it. Yes, thanks to my fabulous sister they’ve done it before, but also because they’re fantastic people. Without the love and support of my wife and friends and family I would not be where I am today.
But these words, “transgender” and “transitioned” are hard for me because they both have lost their complexity in their assimilation into the mainstream. There is a lack of nuance of time and space. To be transgender is something largely understood as existing within the dogmatic terminus of male or female. And to “transition” imparts a sense of immediacy, a before and after from one terminus to another. But the reality, my reality is that I’ve been transitioning and will continue to transition all of my life, through the infinite that exists between male and female as it does in the infinite between the binary of zero and one. We need to elevate the dialogue beyond the simplicity of binary. Binary is a false idol.
Now, gender theory and queer theory hurt my tiny brain. The combinations of words, like freeform jazz, clang disjointed and discordant in my ears. I long for understanding of queer and gender theory but it’s a struggle as is the struggle for understanding of my own identity. I have a quote in my office though by José Muñoz given to me by a good friend. I stare at it in contemplation sometimes trying to decipher its meaning but the last sentence resonates:
“Queerness is essentially about the rejection of a here and now and an insistence on potentiality for another world.”
So I will continue to be an optimist adding my shoulder to the Sisyphean struggle of progress and in my very being, be an example of the potentiality of another world.
Lilly Wachowski

they were better directors when they were both men
Mmmmh… Nope.
Biologically speaking, they’re still men.
Hmmm. If this is just a ruse to make us forget which siblings directed those last few flops… we’re on to you, ladies!
One would like to give them the benefit of the doubt but nothing has been good since the original Matrix. That leads me to think it was lifted from someone else.
yea that black lady. what was her name?
Philip K. Dick.
From his VALIS trilogy. Which was a real trilogy.
Nope. Ghost In the Shell
Can’t say I’ve enjoyed everything they’ve made, but their work has always been interesting and original. And Bound, their first film, is an overlooked gem.
I loved Cloud Atlas. Not a perfect film, but thoughtful and fascinating.
From what I recall, Sens8 has been rather well-received.
Of course, that could easily be attributed to Michael J. Straczynski…
Lifted from someone else?
Look no further than VALIS by Philip K. Dick (whose books became films including BLADE RUNNER, MINORITY REPORT, TOTAL RECALL, RUNNING MAN, and a bunch more.)
VALIS *IS* “The Matrix”, except it was actually a trilogy – and it actually happened. #kingfelix
Stephen King wrote Running Man, not Philip K. Dick.
You are correct, sir. I wondered how two shitty Ahnold movies made that list. :))
I’ll sub in THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU, A SCANNER DARKLY, and maybe RADIO FREE ALBEMUTH.
VALIS really is The Matrix. Except PKD is Neo and the empire never ended.
hmmmmm ….
This is a powerful statement in service of how difficult this transition is for someone with so much. Imagine the pain for someone with little. Compassion and acceptance are the mark of an evolved society. We are not that, but as a work in progress, the kind of proclamation that Lily makes is another step in helping to create awareness so that at some time, in some decade, we may be a more healthy and tolerant society of people.
Well said. : )
That first Matrix movie was pretty good though.
Congratulations, Lilly.
Good for her, sincerely.
I think the gist of what Lilly is saying is that we should probably all error on the side of caution and just be nice to each other. This probably explains why she lives in Chicago and not Hollywood.
You think Chicago is kinder to transgenders than Hollywood? That’s a swing and a miss.
Transgenders make up .03% of the population yet somehow there are 2 in the same family who were both brothers? The odds of that are infinitesimally small.
Er, and your point is?
He’s a mathematician. This is like a holy grail for them.
It can be fascinating and inspire questions without being judgmental or negative.
Unless… being transgender is not as random as you think it is and is somehow related to genes.
So it turns out that Hollywood DOES employ women directors.
Fantastic news! Cheers!
Why?
Maybe this is all part of an elaborate plan for them not to be officially credited with making Speed Racer…
that movie was good man!
I’ll back you up on that, I really enjoyed it.
Warner Bros. may disagree with you there.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. “Because science.”. Such a proof. No, it isn’t. Also, some of the heads of that institution are known to be homophobic and “Orthodox”. Paul McHugh… “who describes himself as religiously orthodox, politically liberal and culturally conservative — a believer in marriage and the Marines, a supporter of institutions and family values.”. He isn’t there, anymore. He has made ridiculous claims on more than this topic.
You look into it, actually. Nothing was proven by making and testing ARTIFICIAL brains. There is very little actually understood when it comes to thought. The best research has is that particular neurones fire (not always) in particular circumstances; for a range of human experiences and reactions. It’s vague. Neuropsychology is an extremely vague discipline; whether people like hearing it or not. There is a lot of research and very few laws within the discipline. The laws of physics… compared to the laws of neuroscience; yeah, there is a massive difference. One field actually has a plethora; the other doesn’t.
I can only imagine the childhood these two must have had. Now that’s a movie you definitely don’t won’t to watch. Kind of like their last few.
Ridiculous. Most ppl who are transgender women are poor and can’t afford surgery. That doesn’t make them less of a woman.
Gender is what takes place in the mind. There are several scientific studies that show, in particular, that transgender women, have female brain characteristics. Google ‘transgender brain’.
Science, it’s a real thing.
Then let live and let live, brother! Citing one biased study as scientific proof is no more an basis for intolerance than the occasional raciest study throughout history that African American brains are inferior to white brains. The only “small brains” here are the ones conducting such phony ‘studies’.
And as human beings, we ALL “demand” respect, no matter our orientation. That’s just one of the fundamentals of a civilized society.
Congrats to them both for being able to be who they are.
With that said, they need to make another movie that actually makes money.
No one really cares.
of course. which is proven by the fact that yours is the only comment posted here… oh, wait…
you took the time to post your stupid comment, no? Also, power to Lilly.
Sorry, they’re not women. As a natural born woman, I’m insulted by gender dysphoria becoming just another topic to discuss over tea. Bullshit. It’s a psychological issue best left to medical professionals. Silicone boobs and estrogen shots do not make someone a woman. Contrary to what these men ‘feel’, our gender has been decided for us. Our gender is not a ‘choice’ like buying new shoes is. This entire, ‘our gender is fluid’ crap, is self-indulgent and typical of those who need psychological assessment for the proper mental treatment.
Let’s not confuse gender dysphoria with being lesbian and gay. In the LGBT community, the “T” doesn’t belong there. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals simply love those of the same sex, or remain open as to whom they’ll love — transsexuals don’t know who they are, or what they are — yet alone who to love. Example: Look at Bruce Jenner. He said he was not homosexual. Now he says he’s open to ‘dating’ men. What! He’s totally in need of help. He, and those like him, are simply bringing back the ‘freak’ label for those in the lesbian and gay community.
Oh — I’m a lesbian. And, none of these ‘gender’ unidentifiable people have *anything* in common with myself, or my male gay friends. Period. End of story. Done.
The only work of her and her sister’s I’ve seen is Jupiter Ascending, which was… blech.
Still, I’m glad to hear that she’s come out as transgender and wish her and her sister the best.
…one of these days, I’ll actually get around to watching The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas, Bound, and Speed Racer.
No you won’t. Trust me on that.
“… a lengthy letter for Windy City Times …” – perfect.
