Focus Features has just announced that they will be opening Jeff Nichols’ Loving exclusively on Nov. 4 with a further expansion the following Friday on Nov. 11. Nichols has the Warner Bros. sci-fi drama Midnight Special opening this Friday in New York and Los Angeles. Focus launched its Oscar wniner The Theory of Everything in the same first frame November slot back in 2014.
Loving follows Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and African-American woman who fell in love and were married in 1958. The state of Virginia, where they were making their home, sought to end their love story by first jailing and then banishing them. But together they took a civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, all the way to the Supreme Court, which reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their union became an inspiration to couples everywhere. Nichols also wrote the movie and it’s based on Nancy Buirski’s Emmy Award-winning documentary The Loving Story. Pic stars Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga and Michael Shannon. It’s produced by Ged Doherty & Colin Firth, Sarah Green, Nancy Buirski, and Marc Turtletaub & Peter Saraf. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones serves as EP.
