“I want to thank Donald Trump,” Vice-President Joe Biden sarcastically told a laughing D.C. gathering celebrating Black History Month today. “The stuff he’s doing, and others, the stuff Cruz is doing,” the VP said on a Super Tuesday dominated by the ex-Apprentice host, according to pool reports. “He’s making the American people look in the mirror,” Biden added of racially and culturally charged statements and stances Trump has made since launching his White House bid back in June.
“And the American people are honest and they look in the mirror and see what’s looking back at them,” the possible once successor to Barack Obama asserted. “If we’re smart, and we’re lucky, I’m convinced that the American people are prepared over the next decade to gradually deal with institutional racism.”
The Veep’s comments to an esteemed crowd at his Naval Observatory official residence comes as Trump and Hillary Clinton both raked up big wins in states all over the country in the biggest single day of the 2016 primaries.
The remarks also come two days after Biden appeared at the 88th Academy Awards to introduce a performance by Lady Gaga. The mocking of Trump today comes less than a week since Biden said he felt “obliged to apologize” during a visit to Mexico for statements about immigrants from the billionaire and other GOP contenders. “Some of the rhetoric coming from some of the presidential candidates on the other team are, I think, dangerous, damaging and incredibly ill-advised,” Biden said on February 25 in a joint appearance with President Enrique Pena Nieto in Mexico City.
Biden has called Trump out by name before today in what increasingly looks to be a race between the real estate mogul and The Art of the Deal author and the former Secretary of State. Tonight in a Super Tuesday victory speech with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie by his side, Trump joked that he was becoming more “diplomatic” and said he “disavowed” recently offered support from KKK Grand Wizard David Duke.
