Former longtime CBS head of comedy Wendi Trilling has launched a production company, TrillTV, and signed a pod deal with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment (Life In Pieces, Secrets & Lies, The Mysteries Of Laura). Under the agreement, Trilling will develop and produce comedy and drama projects for network and cable through TrillTV in association with Kapital. Trilling, who starts today, will be based at Kapital’s offices in West Hollywood.
The pact stems from the collaboration between Kaplan and Trilling this development season on Adult Children, a half-hour comedy written/executive produced by Gabrielle Allan and Jennifer Crittenden. The project, from CBS Studios and Kapital Entertainment, marked Trilling’s first stint as a producer.
This is Kapital Entertainment’s second pod deal — Kaplan has a similar agreement with another producer, Tracy Katsky, and her KatCo. Under that pact, Katsky has set up a number of projects, including comedy Botcop, which received a pilot presentation order at Fox.
The ThrillTV and KatCo pod deals are different from Kapital’s joint venture with Sharon Horgan’s Merman Films, run by Clelia Mountford, which is intended to encompass original content in both the U.S and the UK. That partnership has yielded Divorce, the upcoming HBO comedy series starring Sarah Jessica Parker, which Horgan created.
Trilling, network TV’s pre-eminent comedy development executive of the past decade, left her post as CBS’ EVP in May after a stint at the net spanning a quarter of a century. There, she helped put together and championed CBS’ long-running comedy Everybody Loves Raymond. She also was a big supporter of How I Met Your Mother and the Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy The New Adventures Of Old Christine and was instrumental in CBS’ acquisition of spec scripts 2 Broke Girls and Life In Pieces, the latter produced by Kaplan. The list of CBS comedy series that Trilling developed through the years also includes The King Of Queens and Chuck Lorre’s Two And A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly and Mom.
