Hot off her well-received performance in Fox’s Grease Live, Vanessa Hudgens has signed on as the lead of NBC’s superhero-themed comedy pilot Powerless, from A To Z creator Ben Queen and Warner Bros. TV.
Based on characters from DC Comics, Powerless is a workplace comedy set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.
Hudgens will play Emily Locke, an insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people and who likes to fly under the radar and just get her work done. She finds herself increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various Super Heroes that proliferate in her city.
Queen is the writer/executive producer. Michael Patrick Jann is set to direct and exec produce.
Following the success of Grease Live, where Hudgens played Rizzo, she was approached for a number of pilots, opting to go with Powerless. The High School Musical and Spring Breakers alumna is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
