EXCLUSIVE: Who said there is no upside being on the wrong side of Donald Trump? Fox News Channel star Megyn Kelly is closing on a deal with HarperCollins to write a book at what sources said is in the range of a whopping $10 million for world rights. Her reps are denying that number — I heard it’s closer to $11 million — but they confirm she has made the deal for a book to be published in the fall. They’re not calling it a memoir, but that’s what I heard on the book circuit all day.
The deal keeps Kelly fully in the Fox fold. She has had a remarkable rise after moderating the first debate of Republican Party candidates in August. There, she was excoriated by Trump after she called him on his penchant for referring to women who displease him as “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals.” Trump took great umbrage and has attacked Kelly since. The move largely has backfired. Fox News stuck by Kelly, and after refusing to take part in the most recent GOP debate on Fox News, Trump acknowledged his no-show might have cost him victory in the Iowa caucus. The deal was brokered by CAA, which signed Kelly in September, right after her first flare-up with Trump.
This would exceed that $8 million to $10 million that Trainwreck writer-star Amy Schumer just got for a book from Gallery Books. Kelly anchors Fox News Channel’s The Kelly File, and her show is the No. 2-rated cable news program. She got big ratings for her exclusive interview with 19 Kids And Counting‘s Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar at the height of their scandal, and her profile escalated dramatically after her encounter with Trump, who did not help himself after the debate when he called Kelly names and complained that, “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her — whatever.” Trump alienated women with that comment, and Kelly broadened her awareness becoming a symbol for female empowerment. Kelly will have plenty to talk about when she guests with Stephen Colbert on Sunday night after Super Bowl 50.
The publisher confirmed the deal tonight and said the book was acquired by Lisa Sharkey, SVP-Director of Creative Development. It will be edited by Matt Harper, executive editor.“Megyn Kelly is among the most interesting and influential women in America today and we are thrilled to be publishing her first book,” said Sharkey. “This book is coming out at the perfect time and is bound to be one of the most read and talked about books of the fall.”
