FilmNation will launch international sales at the EFM on Alex Gibney’s documentary thriller, Zero Days which is world premiering in competition at the Berlin Film Festival. The cybercrime investigation tells the story of Stuxnet, self-replicating computer malware that the U.S. and Israel unleashed to destroy a key part of an Iranian nuclear facility, and which ultimately spread beyond its intended target. Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions and Global Produce’s Marc Shmuger are producers. Exec producers are Jeff Skoll and Diane Weyermann of Participant Media and Sarah Dowland. Submarine is handling domestic sales.
As the Berlin Film Festival increasingly cozies up to international television drama, Tom Tykwer’s Babylon Berlin announced its lead cast here on Wednesday, using the eve of the main event as a launch pad. Shooting starts in April on the joint production from X-Filme, ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film. Generation War’s Volker Bruch will star with Liv Lisa Fries (She Deserved It), the partners said. Set in roaring 20s Berlin, the story centers on a police inspector working a hotbed of drugs, politics, murder, art, emancipation and extremism. Cloud Atlas and Run Lola Run helmer Tykwer created the series with Achim von Borries and Hendrik Handloegten. Tykwer is showrunner. Sky will air the drama in 2017. Beta has international sales. Sky Deutschland CEO Carsten Schmidt indicated the series falls in line with a direction the company will continue to embrace in the future.
London-based Carnaby Sales & Distribution has boarded Mozart drama Interlude In Prague with James Purefoy, Aneurin Barnard and Samantha Barks starring. John Stephenson (Animal Farm) is directing from a screenplay by Brian Ashby. Set in the eponymous city in 1787, the tragic love story is based on real events and takes place over a few turbulent months in Mozart’s life which influenced the creation of Don Giovanni. Productive International’s Huw Penalt Jones is producing with principal photography to start in April.
