Cablevision’s cozy relationship with CBS just became a little cozier. The Long Island-based cable operator said today that it will be the first to let its customers stream live CBS programming via CBS.com and on mobile devices using the CBS App.
The one catch is that users have to be within a market served by a CBS owned station. That includes New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
That shouldn’t be a big problem: Most of the cable company’s 2.6 million video customers are clustered in the tri-state area around New York City.
The announcement comes as Cablevision hopes to persuade regulators to approve its $10 billion sale to European telecom company Altice. It also follows by about six months Cablevision’s agreement to be the first operator to offer CBS’ subscription streaming services for Showtime and CBS All Access.
“We applaud Cablevision in recognizing the value of delivering CBS programming to its subscribers outside the home, so they can watch CBS whenever they want on whichever device they choose,” CBS Television Networks Distribution President Ray Hopkins says.
