Bold Films, the indie film financier behind the Keira Knightley biopic Colette and Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive, has inked multi-year output deals in the UK and Ireland with Icon Film Distribution and in Canada via Elevation Pictures. Both of those deals were brokered by Sierra/Affinity and further solidify existing relationships between the companies. Icon released Drive, while Elevation distributed the Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer Nightcrawler, another Bold film.
“Placing our thriving slate for theatrical distribution in two key foreign territories constitutes a major strategic advance for Bold,” said chief exec Gary Michael Walters. “We accelerate our ability to mount productions, deepen our market penetration, and increase our ability to shape our overseas releases. Bold’s strong track record of success with Icon and Elevation gives us all a great foundation for future growth.”
Last year Bold produced and financed Whiplash starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, and recently announced it will be financing Gyllenhaal’s Boston marathon bombing movie Stronger. Deadline revealed exclusively yesterday that Colette, Bold’s first foray into UK filmmaking, had virtually sold out worldwide for Hanway Films.
The output deals were negotiated by Jonathan Kier, Sierra/Affinity’s President of Sales and Distribution, and Jen Gorton, Sierra/Affinity’s VP International Sales along with Ian Dawson, CEO of Icon Film Distribution, and Laurie May, Elevation Pictures co-president.
Sierra/Affinity is the tie-up between Nick Meyer’s Sierra Pictures, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, OddLot Entertainment and Bold Films. Following eOne’s strategic equity investment in Sierra Pictures in January, the international sales and distribution of films produced and acquired by eOne Features, as well as eOne-distributed films from The Mark Gordon Company, will be handled by Sierra/Affinity outside of territories where eOne directly distributes films. Additionally Sierra/Affinity represents sales on select films from Focus Features.
