It’s been a long time since Stallone has garnered serious awards buzz — 39 years in fact. He was twice-nominated for Academy Awards in 1977, for acting and screenwriting in Rocky. He was also nominated in the same categories at that year’s Golden Globes. Perhaps that’s why Stallone was so visibly shocked to have won.
Receiving a standing ovation from the packed ballroom at the Beverly Hilton as he walked to the stage to accept his trophy, Stallone gushed teary-eyed that “I am the sum total of everyone I’ve ever met.” “Last time I was here [in] 1977, I was kinda hit by tumbleweeds… the view is so beautiful now.” Stallone thanked his reps, his producers and others who helped him along in his career, and saved particularly sentimental words for his wife. “Having your love is the greatest award in the world every day,” Stallone said.
“Most of all,” he said, concluding his speech, “I wanna thank my imaginary friend, Rocky Balboa, for being the best friend I ever had.”
There were, however, two names left out of his acceptance speech: Creed director Ryan Coogler, and his Creed co-star Michael B. Jordan. Although he came back onstage during the commercial break to correct that mistake and thank the two of them personally, the fact it wasn’t televised meant online reaction was not positive: civilians and celebs alike took to social media to slam him for the error.
Lesson: Make sure to bring a list onstage with you.
