Joining Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, the film adaptation of Allegiant, the final novel in Veronica Roth’s Divergent series, has been split in half. Rather than go the “Part One, Part Two” route followed by its predecessors however, the two films are getting unique titles. The first of them is, of course, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, which hits theaters March 18. (Ascendant is the next film’s title.) The official trailer for Allegiant dropped today, and you can watch it here right now.
For the final installment(s) of the series, the setting is changing significantly, from inside the walled off city of Chicago where people are sorted into cliques based on test results, to, well, outside the wall, where the world is apparently a wasteland and people live inside hugely advanced video game cutscenes. But as befits the beginning of the end of a series beloved by millions, the Allegiant trailer is very emotional, less about the plot and more about the high stakes for its main characters. It’s also unexpectedly mournful. Make of that what you will.
