I’ve learned that AMC has put another drama script on a track for a possible straight-to-series order. I hear the network is opening a writers room for Marvel (working title), a drama from Scott Free Prods. inspired by the story of Jet Propulsion Laboratory co-founder Jack Parsons.
Written by Mark Heyman, Marvel (no relation to the comic book company) is based on the book Strange Angel by George Pendle. Parsons was mourned as a science prodigy when he died at 37 in 1952. But it soon was discovered that the maverick rocketeer had been a devotee of black magic. Heyman executive produces with Scott Free’s Ridley Scott and David Zucker.
Marvel is following a model AMC established last spring with three drama scripts selected for further development: The Son, Goliath and Lodge 49. They set up writers rooms to work on scripts and outlines with an eye toward straight-to-series orders. The goal was to have three to five completed backup scripts, a few more outlines and a completely mapped-out first season. One of the three projects, The Son, has just received a series order.
In addition to straight-to-series orders, AMC still picks up pilots, including Fear the Walking Dead and Preacher, both of which went to series.Marvel stems from a first-look deal Scott Free had with AMC. Under that pact, the company also had been developing Dan Simmons’ book The Terror. The futuristic drama, written/exec produced by Dave Kajganich and exec produced by Alexandra Milchan, Guymon Casady, and Scott Lambert, also had been eying a straight-to-series order
Scott Free’s series portfolio includes CBS’ The Good Wife and the upcoming BrainDead, PBS’ Mercy Street, Amazon’s The Man In The High Castle and FX’s Taboo.
